Cant build Orbital Ring on planet due to existing Habitat? (2024)

May I ask the logical reason for this? I dont understand why you shouldnt be able to.

EDIT: This would be the case as well if you built a megastructure above a planet as well. So lets say why cant you have a science nexus orbiting a planet have an orbital ring. To be honest this rather seems to me a technical oversight instead of a "working as designed" but of course I am happy to be educated and hear the explanation. Similarly how you still cant build simultenaously a gateway construction site and a megastructure construction site in the same system.

You sure? my last game I had exactly that. but I built the ring first I believe.

Is there any special value in building a Habitat over a habitable planet?

Right now it seems like it's just a mistake to do this, and that's a bit unfortunate.

It was explicitly stated in the dev diary that you should have to choose between building a habitat or an orbital ring over a planet, as they occupy the same planetary orbit spot.

Definitely not an oversight.

This, it's just another noob trap.

I doubt it's "working as intended" to still block you from building an orbital ring should the habitat get destroyed, which it currently does. You have to enable console to fix it.

Because we don't want multiple megastructures in orbit of the same planet. However the construction site issue should be reported as a bug.

Biggest gain from building habitats in orbit of habitable worlds is the Orbital Prospecting decision that Void Dwellers get from the Adaptability tree can find energy, mineral or research districts there.

Yeah, this part is just poor design. The space should be freed up if the Habitat is destroyed, and there should be a way to dismantle a Habitat without the use of a world cracker.

That applies to just about any habitat, not just ones orbiting habitable worlds.

I wonder why the finisher effect is different for void dweller and non-void dweller. I wish I can get both decisions regardless of being a void dweller or not.

What does that do which is different from doing the same thing over a barren planet?

How is it more useful to build the same Habitat over a livable planet?

I'm pretty sure you get that decision on any Habitat, not just the ones built around habitable worlds.

Different planet types support different districts, but habitable worlds are the only ones that all three types in the random roll.

Honestly that sounds like a negative, not a benefit -- usually when I use that decision, I would prefer to get a specific thing.

More specifically, that specific thing you want is almost always research districts.
If you're just blindly building habitats around everything that supports them, you'll end up with about 63% mining districts, 14% energy districts, and 23% research districts. This is mostly thanks to the fact both types of Barren world can only get mining districts.

If you're looking for research districts, they're only available as a 50/50 on Frozen worlds, Toxic worlds, and Gas Giants.
Once you run out of those, the 33% roll from habitable worlds isn't ideal, but it's your next best shot. This mostly only applies to void dwellers, but depending on what you're doing with the habitable world it can be optimal to just try your luck with a habitat.

So this is a technical reason why you shouldnt be able to do so. In this case I see that these systems have the common demonitator as being megastructures. Dont you think it is now an old thought out design and should be changed as many new things came into Stellaris being a "megastructure"? I believe not all of these fall into the megastructure category and just limit you in the technical aspects of the game. I am yet to hear a good reason why you shouldnt be able to build a Habitat and an Orbital Ring around a planet.

As for the Gateway construction bug. I have reported it years ago.
