In 2022, the physicians of Columbus Ortho recruited Dr. Hurt, who was then an orthopaedic surgeon and Assistant Professor of Sports Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation. While in practice in Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. Hurt served as a team physician (orthopaedic surgeon) for Jackson State University and Tougaloo College and multiple high school athletic programs, as well as the Mississippi Braves (AA Professional Baseball team). He now serves in the same role for area junior high schools, high schools, as well as Mississippi State University and Mississippi University for Women.

Dr. Hurt enjoys the challenge of treating a wide range of orthopaedic issues regardless of how clinically challenging they may be, and regardless of if they involve an athlete, injured worker, or someone enjoying retirement. He has published articles in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. Dr. Hurt is double Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has extensive expertise in treatment of shoulder and knee conditions and sports injuries in the adult and pediatric populations. He treats ligamentous knee injuries (ACL,PCL,MCL, LCL tears and dislocations), meniscal tears, patellar instability, knee and shoulder arthritis, shoulder instability and rotator cuff pathology. He also performs cartilage restoration procedures and has expertise in orthopaedic biologics (STEM cells, PRP, etc). Dr. Hurt takes pride in his personalized care and availability and access he provides to his patients.

Dr. Hurt is a native of Clinton, Mississippi, and graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Biology, Finance and German. He completed medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham.

Dr. Hurt completed his first two years of Orthopaedic Surgery training at University of Florida Health-Shands in Jacksonville. He then transferred to New Orleans to be closer to his wife and completed his final three years of Orthopaedic Surgery training at Tulane University. He served as Chief Resident during his final year of residency. Dr. Hurt went on to complete a Fellowship at Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Jackson. While practicing full-time, Dr. Hurt recently received a Master’s of Business Administration from Millsaps College – Else School of Management. He is currently the President of the Mississippi Orthopaedic Society as well as President of the Board of the Mississippi Baptist Children’s Village. He teaches a growth group class and children’s Bible Drill Class at his church where he also serves as a deacon.

Dr. Hurt is married to Dr. Christy Hurt, who is a board-certified dermatologist that will be relocating her practice to Starkville. Dr. Hurt and his wife cherish time with their 4 children: James, Luke, Mary Harper, and Abigail. He is an avid outdoorsman, hunter, golfer, and sports fan.
