Is it cheaper to lay carpet or carpet tiles? ›

Broadloom carpet comes in a wide variety of colors and styles, and because pros install padding underneath, carpet is very soft underfoot. Because of the added materials needed for installation, however, getting new carpet costs more on average than installing new carpet tiles.

You can calculate it on any calculator, just use the total number of square feet in your room, divide by “4” which is the number of square feet covered by one 24 x 24 inch tile. Take that result and multiply times “1.15” to find the total number of tiles to order when the design you want is 24 x 24 inches.

Carpet tiles come with a backing already bonded to the tile so there's no need for a separate underlay, saving you time and money. You do need to make sure that your floor is level and sound though. By giving it a quick clean and checking it to make sure there are no ridges or loose bits, you should be good to go.

With most applications, a padded surface beneath carpet tiles is not needed or recommended.
