Johnson breaks Rock rebound record in 62-45 loss at Cal U - Slippery Rock University Athletics (2024)

CALIFORNIA (PA) - Jamiyah Johnson broke The Slippery Rock University women's basketball single-season rebounding record as in a 62-45 loss at California University (Pa.) Monday.

Johnson officially broke the record, which previously belonged to Diane Walker who totaled 339 rebounds over 29 games during in 1985-86, early in Monday's game before finishing the contest with 12 rebounds to give her 348 with two games remaining in the season.

The loss moves SRU's record to 11-15 overall and 6-14 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division while Cal U improves to 20-4 overall and 15-4 in the conference. Additionally, SRU's defeat also eliminates The Rock from postseason contention.

Johnson led SRU's efforts with a double-double of 18 points to go with her aforementioned 12 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive glass. Rounding out the leaders were Kennedy Middleton with six points, five rebounds and one steal and Anyah Curd who ended the contest with six points and three rebounds.

Also tallying points against the Vulcans were Deleah Gibson (5), Kelley McKnight (4), Bella Long (3), Daeja Quick (2) and Emily Venick (1). Quick also grabbed five rebounds and passed out three assists.

The opening eight minutes of the contest were close, but the Vulcans ended the first quarter by scoring seven straight points to push its lead out to 13 at 23-10 heading into the second quarter.

The Rock could never recover from the early deficit as California took a 37-20 advantage into the halftime break while proceeding to maintain its double-digit lead throughout the final two quarters on the way to a 17-point win.

As a team, Slippery Rock shot 38.8 percent (19-of-49) from the floor, 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from 3-point range and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from the foul line. Despite the loss SRU outrebounded Cal U 41-39 in addition to leading 24-12 in points in the paint.

The Vulcans ended the night shooting 31.4 percent (22-of-70) overall, 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from long range and 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the charity stripe. California forced The Rock into 22 turnovers while committing just four miscues of their own in addition to holding advantages in points off turnovers (21-2) and second chance points (14-10).

Slippery Rock hosts Edinboro University for its final home contest of the season as well as its senior day game 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at Morrow Field House. Prior to the game, The Rock's 2021-22 senior class of Quick and Johnson will be recognized for their contributions to the program over their careers.
